A new exhibition at Culver City’s Maxwell Alexander Gallery brings together Western landscapes by six talented — and diverse — artists.Continuing its commitment to providing fresh perspectives on traditional art forms, Maxwell Alexander Gallery presents a group exhibition of highly respected artists working in the Western genre. “How the West Was Won” features new paintings by Glenn Dean, Jeremy Lipking, Logan Maxwell Hagege, Ed Mell, Bill Schenck, and Tim Solliday. The works are united by their subject matter, but, when displayed together, they also highlight the very different artistic personalities of each of these artists.
Working in more traditional modes, Glenn Dean and Jeremy Lipking capture the serenity of the American West in their paintings, which feature canyons, plateaus, and expansive skies. A deep sense of spirituality pervades these works and lends a transcendent significance to their quiet subject matter.
From these artists, whose style is soft and painterly, Bill Schenck and Logan Maxwell Hagege stand worlds apart. Schenck and Hagege work in frank, linear styles with little color modulation. Schenck employs a high-key color palette with hard outlines, often attaching captions to his scenes. Dripping with irony and humor, the captions express Schenck’s love for the culture of the American West and simultaneously comment on its dark history.
Tim Solliday’s pastel paintings beautifully capture the color of the shrubs, cliffs, and skies that make Western vistas unforgettable. His oil paintings are executed with lively brushstrokes and accented with bright splashes of color.
Ed Mell’s landscapes comprise angular forms, at times blurring the boundary between the representational and the abstract. Mell’s paintings both reference the Modern art movement and assert their position in its wake, linking a highly expressive technique and emotive palette with a clear subject. Each represented artist truly does contribute his own particular form of artistic expression.”How the West Was Won” opens June 1 and will be on view through July 6. Maxwell Alexander Gallery is located at 6144 Washington Blvd. in Culver City. For more information, visitwww.maxwellalexandergallery.com.
