John Moyers started painting professionally in 1978, over 40 years ago...And what we see with his latest solo exhibit, "The Narrow Trail," is a result of evolution, dedication, and creativity unmatched by his contemporaries. Malcolm Gladwell stated in his book "Outliers," that 10,000 hours of work will create an extraordinary ability or skill. Well, Moyers would have reached that milestone decades ago. As a result of his commitment and knowledge of painting the west, we have the pleasure of witnessing a wholly formed and developed artistic master.

Today, Moyers is able to fully express his vision through his paintings. A younger artist might have the inkling of a vision but not the skill, a mid career artist might have the skill but hasn't fully developed the vision of a master. Or many times with technology, we see artists who have figured out a way to sidestep the fundamentals of drawing and painting. Not with Moyers. He freehand draws his works, overlays them with translucent colored washes, then applies the paint. His mind and hand are in sync at a level only decades of work can achieve. In his latest solo exhibition, "The Narrow Trail," Moyers takes us on a journey of the west. From Taos Indians wrapped in patterned blankets, many of which Moyers has studied or owns in his personal collection, to Bucking Broncos and Vaqueros. The bucking broncos feel alive, the dust flying high, abstract shapes and colors keep the viewer locked in on the exhilarating ride. In "Heading to Ranchos," Moyers flexes his painting muscles, mixing a palette of colors from creamy greens to splashes of pink. The focus is on the three main figures with the detail in the background fading out to impressionistic bold brushstrokes with textures, reminding us that this is a painting - not a picture.
