 Join us May 7th, (in person) in our downtown Los Angeles gallery, from 5-8pm for the opening reception of DESERT SHAPES by Logan Maxwell Hagege. The solo showcase features the artist's iconic portraits of Native Americans and his invented modernist desert landscapes. 

"Some of my newest works I have been holding onto for about two years," states Logan Maxwell Hagege.  He does this to see how they resonate with him after he's been able to live with them over time.  Coming off a recent public auction result nearing $200,000 (just shy of a record set in 2019), Hagege's success can partly be credited with the fact that he is his own biggest critic -- only releasing artworks to the public that he is 100% satisfied with.

Hagege's famed portrait paintings have become some of his most sought after works.  His ability to mix dimensionality with flat surfaces, light and dark, reflective light, and compositional elements - like his signature cloud formations framing the figure - all come together in a simplified yet extremely complex scene.  Each portion of the painting has a purpose.  In "Rio Grande" (shown below), the maze of folded blanket stripes of the Rio Grande leads you to the figure's face, the shadows raking across his eyes leads you to his classic western hat, which leads you to the seemingly flat deep blue mountain.  Before your eyes can leave the painting they are brought back around with the large white cloud, where you begin the journey again.  

The artist's time spent painting outdoors informs his studio works.  Most known for painting the Vermilion Cliffs region of Northern Arizona, where he has a home and studio, Hagege took a different approach for DESERT SHAPES.  He let his memories take the lead.  Though his outdoor studies and photos were referenced, the majority of the landscapes are painted from memory.  And imagination was used whenever possible.  By using this method to paint the desert, Hagege is able to fully capture the desert as it feels to him - unique.  Hagege sees the world and more specifically, the desert, different than us all.  These are the paintings that really bring us into his world.  

An artist should create what they see, not what the rest of us see.  

"All the artists I've loved have had an evolution in their work.  So I love that freedom of being able to do things differently, and just exploring more.  It's that freedom that can give an artist their artistic soul," states Hagege.
