Maxwell Alexander Gallery is proud to present the debut Los Angeles solo showcase of American landscape artist, Josh Elliott. Opening virtually March 13th, Vagabond, will feature about eight new paintings of Elliott’s interpretation of the West. The early preview is available by request.
 
Josh Elliott, a renowned awarding winning and third generation artist, cut his teeth painting in the Pacific Northwest and continues to travel throughout the West painting on location for inspiration. He sees his outdoor paintings as a reaction to what is in front of him, and feels they act an exercise to sharpen his skills. He considers his studio paintings to be a culmination of everything he has learned from painting out, combined with his own artistic interpretation.
 
Elliott is known for his vast and unique perspectives on all types of landscapes, focusing on the West. He uses bold shapes with added details so that viewers can enjoy his works from afar but find new discoveries up close. His use of reflected light adds to the authentic feel of the outdoors, but at closer look, intuitively placed bursts of unexpected color reward the viewer’s curiosity.
 
Elliott admits he loves to inspect paintings up close, to see the brushwork and imagine how the piece was created -- and hopes viewers will do the same with his paintings. “I want my work to invite closer inspection,” says Elliott. Although the human element is included in some of the works, for example a farm at the base of a large mountain, the landscape is the artist’s focus
 
“I want to show the variety of the West, as it has many facets. These paintings are mostly about the land, both vast and the intimate. I feel they are peaceful quiet, with only the sound of wind or moving water. These are places I like to be. I am drawn to paint the landscape, because it is where I feel most in the moment, where I feel the most awe. Outside is where I connect most with my soul, where I feel there is something bigger than us, than myself...”
 
Elliott’s latest showcase, Vagabond, features scenes from California, New Mexico, Arizona, Utah, and Montana, where the artist works and lives with his wife and two daughters. “Canyon Quiet” features a towering canyon cliff in Arizona’s Canyon de Chelly with red rock and season changing foliage. As the viewer we are looking up at this massive walls in awe. “January” shows the beautiful white snow of Montana with beautifully painted dark horses as wonderful color juxtaposition. In “Sierra Shadows," Elliott states, “I was intrigued by the dark clouds, the sunlight on the hills and the shadows radiating down the valleys.”
 
Josh Elliott’s artwork is in the permanent collection of the Eiteljorg Museum, Indianapolis IN, The National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City, OK, Booth Museum of Western Art, Cartersville, GA, and the Whitney Western Art Museum at the Buffalo Bill Center of the West in Cody, WY.

Recent awards include the 2018 Victor Higgins Award of Distinction and the 2016 Harrison Eiteljorg Purchase Award, Best in Show, Quest for the West, Eiteljorg Museum, Indianapolis, IN
