A studio visit is one of the most interesting elements of the art world.  When an artist opens their studio, they're letting you into their sacred space.  An artist's studio is full of experiments, most the public will never see - many no one but the artist will ever see (not even their family).  It is their safe space to be free without judgement from collectors, without ego, without restraints.  And from these explorations come the master works that are seen in galleries.

On a visit to Eric Merrell's studio in 2023 we were shown an experimental work that dated back to the artist's school days.  A small painting that hung near an easel stood out as something different (shown above "Box Canyon").  It was obviously an original work by Merrell, you could see his distinctive style - but it was much more graphic.  The small work depicted a canyon with layers of labyrinths behind it - bright orange, red, and yellow shapes all clearly defined by thin dark outlines.

This small "experiment" blossomed into the new series that is presented in "The Land Remains," Merrell's latest exhibition opening online June 15, 2024 with Maxwell Alexander Gallery.

Merrell, along with his noted Photographer wife, Ramona, are a residents of Pasadena, just down the road from the future home of Maxwell Alexander Gallery.  The proximity to the desert and arid lands keeps Merrell on the road for many days of the month.  He can be frequently seen out in the desert sketching from life.  In this new series of outlined landscapes, Merrell reflects the new series is akin to overlaying his on-location sketchbook drawings on top of his studio paintings - a melding of his two worlds.  The different mediums create a two dimensional feel, but the artists's use of color brings the viewer's eyes on a journey, that projects the depth and simple complexity of the desert we all know so well.
